Midwest Area Kitemakers Retreat

Midwest Winds Kiteflyers Circoflex Workshop 2001

Kites Made By Midwest Winds Kitefliers Members

Making your own kites is a rewarding activity.  The creative process adds much enjoyment to the hobby of kiting.  Kite making can be done on many levels, from building simple plastic sled kites to spending many hours designing, making, flying and then competing in kite making at many festivals and conventions.  Several of our members have received National kitemaking prizes for their efforts. You can learn kite making skills from attending local kite club workshops, kite making retreats, online workshops or on you own.  Kite plans, instructions and supplies are available at many locations on the internet.  Supplies for making kites are not normally available in local sewing supply stores.

Midwest Winds Kiteflyers has presented several kite making workshops in the past at which many of our members built their first kites.  In addition, the Midwest Area Kitefliers Retreat (MAKR) is held the 2nd weekend of March every year in Oregon, Illinois.  This retreat is a fun event in which local, national and international instructors present four workshops in two days, building a kite or kite related project in each workshop.  It is well worth the approximately 7 hour drive from Omaha.
